Piecing together this Valentine took me back to elementary school – cold outside, a brightly lit classroom, bits of colored paper.

I cut strips of paper from designs I had made and pasted them onto a heart shape. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it from here. Scan it and print it onto cards? Put it onto a mixed media piece? Both?

I think about all the writers and painters and sculptors who say, “One doesn’t wait to be in the mood to create. One simply creates. Only amateurs” — sniff of disdain here — “wait until they’re inspired.”

Yes but — here in my world sometimes I just don’t feel like it. Like last night when I really wanted to watch that football game (the last college football game until August, ya’ll!). And the night before when I just didn’t feel like it. I did it anyway, so there’s that.

Getting started is the hard part. Once I start, I’m there and I enjoy the paint and trying out new techniques. Tomorrow it may be just as daunting to start. Or it may not.
